Rao’s work depicts the assimilation of the individual into the masses. He seeks to portray this dialogue between the distinctness of the individuals and the conformity of the crowd. His use of strong colors mimic this tension between the two states of an individual. His figures are faceless and abstract, yet distinguishable enough from one another. His brush strokes seemingly melt into another, characterising that balance of identity.

Seen from afar, his works depict the flow of the masses and the progress that can be made from the unity of individuals. However, only when viewed up close, one can understand the singular among the crowd. The series “Little Joys” symbolizes this exchange between the group and the individual. It challenges the viewer to find his/her own individuality, and ponder over the small achievements in life.
